English as a Second Language » ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

The English as a Second Language Department is proud to serve students across the district. We support our multilingual learners as they work to access the general curriculum and learn skills necessary to become successful in the classroom and beyond!

The goal of the English as a Second Language program in Yadkin County Schools is to teach language through content. We have aligned WIDA English Language Development Standards with YCS pacing guides, and we plan our instruction based on the same content being taught in the regular classroom. We work to support regular classroom teachers and other specialists to make the content of core subjects accessible for all English learners.

ESL is not an intervention. ESL teachers provide a service to help students build English language skills. Our approach is designed to assist students to use their first language knowledge to help them acquire English skills in the domains of listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
